Uefa prepare summer transfer window changes starting from next year

The way clubs do their summer transfer business is about to change. UEFA and FIFA are considering revolutionising the summer mercato starting from 2018.

The just ended one was a thrilling summer transfer window full of twists. AC Milan have revolutionized the squad with eleven purchases, Inter have improved the team with interesting profiles and Juventus has managed to sign various good players. But not only in Serie A, the crazy figures spent by Paris Saint Germain for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, Barcelona’s 150 million for Ousmane Dembele and so on.

Many of these negotiations have come to an end only in the last days of the mercato. A statistic that coaches struggle to digest because they often have to redesign their ideas after starting the season with incomplete squads. Different coaches have raised their voice regarding this problem. A problem that the football world wants to face seriously starting from next year.

The top European football leaders gathered between Nyon and Geneva have started discussing the topic in the recent days. The idea of shrinking the lifespan of the summer market session is getting more and more supporters. Already starting from next summer, the transfer campaign could close in early August, just before the start of the domestic leagues. There is nothing official yest, as Premium Sport reports but is a concrete idea.

Even in Italy it is being discussed with special attention. The FIGC could put the matter on its agenda in the coming weeks. Closing dates may differ from federation to federation but UEFA and FIFA are also expected to present their own suggestions. UEFA’s new president Aleksander Ceferin has has openly expressed his position as being in favor of such a policy. A shorter summer transfer window would force the clubs to be more concentrated on their targets.
